how radio was done part 105

April 23, 2009

We’re back in the USSR with how the last brink of the Cold War sounded in 1989, both here and there. Bush the elder is inaugurated with a prayer, and then he’s inaugurated again and again like propaganda. Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses is explained by the BBC, Howard Stern is still in trouble with the FCC, Pirate radio is still broadcasting from off shore ships as we revisit the history of Radio Caroline, and music and DJs from the year. Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

We here begin the next and final year in this radio history, inaugurating 1989 by delving into the radio jingle/station ID productions of Century 21 and other companies producing radio promos. The corporate sound takes over. The Exxon Valdez spills it’s guts, England compiles it’s top 40, The World Series San Francisco earthquake, odd DJs rant between jingles, and even odder music from 1989.

This one emphasizes talk radio from ’88, including clips from Oliver Stone’s film, Talk Radio, 4th Of July programming from a state fair, the Bush/Dukakis presidential campaign, Pan Am 103 destroyed, Roy Story’s Sports Line jamming, and lots of live Receptacle callers talking, all accompanied by what might be called the alternative side of music in 1988.
