This one puts earphasis on cut-up and sampled content in new music and some of the philosophy and attitudes that plunder phonics. John Oswald and his legal encounters over music, “The Return Of Stir The Stumps”- a live radio quiz in which every caller gets a question challenging their knowledge of what music is, and what is the most perfect tool? Much live mixing of multiple musics, live and recorded, and the answer at the end.

What’s music? After some remote ID housekeeping, we tackle the sticking question of music – what is it? How does it work? How do our ears hear music? How does our brain hear music and why? Skipping and cutting, stealing and manipulating, we mix a couple recent Negativland pieces on the subject of music, released and unreleased, as well as Industrial Show Music, Patsy Cline falls to pieces, and some old OTE phone karaoke. This all keeps going at a relatively loud and fast pace.

With a smirk at radio longevity, we cover multiple stations being sold, closed, transformed and reformatted in the increasingly corporate radio environment of ‘89, while Howard Stern debates a listener on obscenity, Crosley Bendix reviews style itself, dialog with the Russians and a melting Soviet Union continue to dominate politics, Jazz and Hip Hop evolve into Techno and House, the razor tape, “Puffy sleeves,” and Negativland performs “You Must Choose” at the Knitting Factory.
