Solo

This one moves mostly through space music and PDQ Bach, with Phillip Glass, Terry Riley, Eno, and Hope Blister, an athletic Beethoven’s 5th symphony in which the musicians play to “win” while the Professor calls the plays, callers continue to say “Hello?” despite our urgings to the contrary, art music mashed, space music crashed, and more on music in the evolution of the human brain and how it works there.

Solo

We begin by emphasizing silence with a long sound check on the air as
I turn everything off and try to figure out where my buzz is coming
from with help from some callers. Frustration rules. Finally, buzz
still in tow, we begin a mix characterized by twisted jazz as Leonard
Bernstein lectures on the working elements of untwisted jazz, Spike
Jones makes a mockery of music in brand new Hi-Fi, the hip are
hoppin,’ some dads are boppin, and how it all works inside our brains
as vibrating air becomes music in our heads.

Jon Leidecker, otherwise known as Wobbly, has begun recording a history of collage in music called “Variations” as an on-line project. Tonight we’re live, remixing the elements from the initial “Variations” project and more. Abstractly hot and heavy for the most part, from clippy to dippy, but full of commentary on the practice of collage in music, old and new.
